Washington Nationals MLB Player Kidnapped

Washington Nationals player Wilson Ramos was reportedly kidnapped recently while he was in Venezuela. The player was in the country for winter league matches, but the unfortunate incident took place according to many reports coming from the United States. While the Washington Nationals of the MLB have not confirmed the report as yet, fans are worried about the fate of their favorite catcher. The Venezuelan record in kidnapping incidents has been alarming, but the new leadership has been able to control it to some extent. There had been a steady rise in kidnapping and homicide rates since the early 1990s, but the government under President Hugo Chavez has managed to keep it where it was around early 2000.

Wilson Ramos has been missing after he was picked up from his Santa Ines home by four armed men. They were carrying guns and made sure that Ramos was not able to defend himself. Although he may have been armed back in the United States within his property, the chances of him being defenseless in Venezuela is quite high. As a result he became an easy target for the kidnappers. Moreover, the kidnappers, if interested in a ransom, may have thought that the American baseball player’s family would be quite rich to pay. While it is unknown who the kidnappers were, many political experts believe that it could be a move by the American administration to hijack the image of the present leadership that has not complied with the economic terms of the present US government. This is a mere speculation, but the US government’s reputation for meddling with the Venezuelan government’s image has been a part of recent history as well.

The American government has not commented on this issue as yet, but are expected to come out with an official statement soon. While many believe that the political leadership in Venezuela has been determined to solve problems of kidnapping, the existing poverty in the country is a probable reason for the unexpected misdeed. Kidnapping a high profile sportsman is never a job that petty kidnappers would take, and that raises the concerns of many in Wilson’s home country.
